Roulette In the 18th Century, the game of Roulette was popularized by the ruler of Monaco, Prince Charles, when he was attempting to assuage financial troubles of the country with the introduction of gambling. The version of Roulette we know today was invented in 1842 by Frenchmen Francois and Louis Blanc. This single zero roulette game was later brought to America, Americans rejected the single zero modification and opted to keep the more traditional double zero Roulette Wheel. Roulette gained the most popularity in America during the California Gold Rush. In order to play the game of Roulette, you must first purchase chips and then place them on the table in the position that you predict the ball will land after the wheel is spun and the ball finds its final stopping place. After all the players have placed their wagers, (betting is allowed up to the point during the spin that the dealer says, “No more bets”), the Roulette Wheel is spun by the dealer. Once the wheel slows to a stop and the ball has fallen into its final numbered slot, the dealer puts a marker on the Roulette Table over the number that the ball has landed on. Any player who bet on that winning number then collects their winnings. The chips of those who did not win are collected by the dealer and the game starts again. As mentioned in the first paragraph, there are two versions of the Roulette Wheel. There is the American Roulette Wheel and The European Roulette Wheel. There are only slight differences in the two wheels, but it does change the outcome of the game a bit. The American Roulette Wheel has 38 numbered slots. These slots are numbered from 1 to 36, 0 and 00. The fact that there are two zeros on this wheel gives the casino a slight 5.26% advantage over the players, meaning that for every hundred dollars that is wagered, the casino makes a $5.26 profit. The European Roulette Wheel has only 37 numbered slots. This wheel’s slots are numbered 0 to 36. Having only one zero gives the casino a lesser advantage of only 2.70%, meaning that for every hundred dollars wagered, the casino’s profit is only $2.70. There are a few other differences between the two games, including chip color. In American Roulette, players are given different colored chips while in European Roulette, the chips are all the same color, making players in European casinos rely on their memory to distinguish their wagers from those of the other players. Also, European Croupiers use what is called a Rake (simply a long stick) to bring in all the chips, while in the American version, the chips are swept in by the use of arms and hands. Gambling - The
